How to Measure Your Balcony or Staircase for a Glass Railing Quotation

You do not need an engineer to get an accurate railing quotation. With a tape measure and a phone camera, ten minutes of measuring lets us send you a priced drawing without a site visit. Here is exactly what we need.

For a balcony

• Total running length of the railing edge, in feet or metres, corner to corner

• Number of corners and whether each is 90 degrees

• Width of the parapet or slab edge where the railing will sit (we need at least 100 mm for spigots, 70 mm for aluminium channel)

• Whether the edge is RCC, brick, or a metal beam

• Required height: 3 ft is standard; some societies ask for 3.5 ft

• One photo from inside looking out, one from outside looking at the edge

For a staircase

• Number of steps and the tread depth of one step

• Total height from the bottom floor to the top floor

• Whether the railing is on the wall side, the open side, or both

• Landing lengths, if any

• One photo of the full flight from the bottom

Common mistakes that delay quotations

• Measuring the floor tile edge instead of the actual railing line

• Forgetting the return piece where the railing meets a wall

• Not mentioning that the slab edge is chamfered or has a drip mould

• Sending a photo without anything for scale
