SS 304 vs SS 316 Railing: Which Stainless Steel Grade Should You Choose in Gujarat?

Every second enquiry we get at our Rajkot factory asks the same question: should my glass railing be SS 304 or SS 316? Both are austenitic stainless steels, both polish to the same mirror or matte finish, and both are used across India for balcony and staircase railings. The difference is corrosion resistance, and that decides where each grade belongs.

What is the actual difference?

SS 316 contains 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, which SS 304 does not. Molybdenum is what resists chloride attack, the salt-laden air you get within roughly 5 km of the coast. In dry inland air both grades perform almost identically for decades.

Where SS 304 is the right choice

• Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Surat interiors and most inland balconies

• Indoor staircase railings in any city

• Projects where budget matters: 304 is typically 25 to 35 percent cheaper than 316 for the same pipe size

Where you must specify SS 316

• Coastal sites: Porbandar, Dwarka, Mandvi, Mumbai sea-facing flats

• Swimming pool railings (chlorine is a chloride)

• Export projects to Senegal, Ghana, Maldives and Gambia, where humidity and salt are constant

How to tell the grades apart on site

You cannot tell by looking. Ask your fabricator for the mill test certificate, or use a molybdenum spot test kit. Cheap SS 202 is often sold as 304, so the certificate matters more than the label.
